Institutions serving the basic and secondary education stages hold a prominent position among all community service institutions, owing to the pivotal role they play in supporting development in general—and economic development in particular—and in continuously meeting the population's ever-growing educational needs. Accordingly, the study is titled "The Status of Indicators and Standards for Basic and General Secondary Educational Institutions in Libya and Their Spatial Implications." It aims to identify the indicators and metrics governing these institutions and assess the extent to which they align with the spatial distribution of the population across Libyan regions. The study employs a descriptive-analytical approach combined with quantitative statistical methods, drawing upon 2023 population estimates and data regarding educational institutions for the 2023–2024 academic year. The results revealed a lack of spatial alignment between the distribution of educational institutions and the population at the regional level, with indicators fluctuating, rising and falling relative to national benchmarks. The study reached a number of findings, perhaps the most significant being the necessity of considering population size and spatial distribution when planning educational institutions across different areas; this is due to its importance as a fundamental element of the educational process and its role in influencing the size of educational institutions.
