      Abstract

This study aims to investigate the prevalence and diversity of parasites affecting various species of ornamental fish in the city of Tripoli, Libya. Ornamental fish farming has seen significant growth in recent years, yet parasitic infections remain a primary constraint, leading to substantial economic losses and health deterioration in captive aquatic environments. The methodology involved the collection of 250 fish samples from different retail outlets and private collections across Tripoli. Microscopic examinations of the skin, gills, and internal organs were conducted to identify ectoparasites and endoparasites. Preliminary statistical analysis revealed a high prevalence of infection, particularly by protozoan parasites such as Ichthyophthirius multifiliis and monogenean trematodes like Dactylogyrus spp. and Gyrodactylus spp. The findings indicate that water quality parameters and stocking density significantly influence the intensity of these infections. This research provides a comprehensive baseline for local veterinarians and hobbyists to implement better diagnostic and preventive measures. Furthermore, it highlights the need for stricter quarantine protocols for imported ornamental species to prevent the introduction of exotic pathogens into the local aquatic ecosystem. The results are discussed in the context of global parasitic trends in ornamental aquaculture, emphasizing the role of sustainable management practices.
